It is absolutely sturdy, extremely reliable, and high-performance, even in very cold water. The Abyss has been tested by the Notified Body INPP of Marseilles with binary (Heliox) and ternary (Trimix) mixtures to a depth of 100 m. The results are compliant with the recommendations of European Regulation EN 250. Breathing effort proved to be much lower than the regulation requires. MARES ABYSS REGULATOR, 2/28/2008 Reviewer: john giudici jr. (philadelphia, pa) THIS IS IT. If there is a better regulator out there I don’t need to know about it. This regulator is as close to breathing on land as it gets. Diving through 80 there is absolutely NO difference in demand from your breathing. This reg. simply breathes the same at the surface as it does at depth. You never feel as though you are “sucking air”, it is just there when you need it. Diving through a fast surface current and during drift dives in current even upside down there is no free flow. A few reviewers on the web have complained about jaw fatigue. The regulator hose is short and stout and can pull a little bit. I did feel a bit of fatigue but I have only four dives on it, and I am not so sure the reviews didn’t make me more aware of it. I quickly got use to it. In a 2007 Scuba Review test this regulator came in second behind a $1500.00 rig. Once you breathe this regulator you’ll figure it is a bargain at any price.
