The release valve is located just above the float and opens the airway when air passes through tiny holes in the valve. This automatic valve release system allows air into the snorkel as you come to the surface. As you submerge, during free diving, the snorkel's air spaces become compressed by surrounding water pressure. Exhale or blow slightly into the snorkel to eliminate the air squeeze or ascend to the surface allowing air spaces to expand.
