To insure visibility in dark locations, the gauge dials use pigments which make them visible in the dark. These pigments come in two types: luminous pigment and light-storage pigment. Luminous pigments glow continuously because of the radioactive material they contain. However, radioactive materials (however small in amount), are strictly controlled for production and disposal, which limits their practical use. Light storage pigments, on the other hand, contain no radioactive materials, but are impractical due to their short luminescence times. The solution is Lumi-Nova: a light storage pigment that can glow for an entire night.
